The Joy of Singing

Just about everybody in some way or another sings along life’s way. It seems that music is inherent to human beings. Some learn to express their music through an instrument, like the guitar or piano. To me, the most beautiful way that people express music is through singing. What if you could get some free online voice training lessons. Would you do it? That is part of the mission of this website.

We are eager to give you the opportunity to train your voice to sing better. In singing better you can sing longer and a wider variety of songs. With a nominal amount of training you can sing the Broadway songs you love as well as the popular songs. With the tools we provide you can even entertain your family and friends in concert. You may or may not wish to go that far, but you could if you wanted to.

What will you need to take the free online voice training lessons?

You will need access to a computer. Good speakers, not necessarily expensive ones, would be nice to have, though any will do. Of course, you will need access to the internet through your cable company or satellite. If you have a little knowledge of music reading that would be a plus.

The most important thing that you will need is a joy of singing and making music.

What you won’t need?

You will not need a musical accompaniment instrument. We shall provide all the accompaniments you will need. All the vocalese will come with the accompaniment and the on page manuscript to follow. Different ranges of exercises will be provided for different voices.

You will not need a special room or acoustical setting. As long as your family and neighbors are not affected you can use your living room. Or if you have a special room, that is fine.

I do recommend that you bookmark this site and add it to your bookmark bar. That way you can access the site with one quick click of the mouse or tap of your finger. As you grow in your singing we shall make more lessons available to you. There will come a time that you will want to have your own copies of music. When that time comes we shall recommend reputable publishers to you. Then you can make your decisions.

There may come a time as you progress that you may wish to have a personal voice teacher. In that case, we shall be glad to help you find one in your own locality. The organization we recommend is called NATS: National Association of Teachers of Singing.

I also recommend that you sign up for our email updates. By signing up you can receive updates when new training posts are added to the site. You can also receive special offers for buying music and other materials to help you in your singing. If you do not find it helpful, you can easily unsubscribe. Our goal is to teach you to sing well, not to annoy you with emails.

Determining your voice range

Let’s get on to the singing. It will help to know what voice range you sing in. The typical voice ranges are: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Each of these can be divided into more definitive groups, but for now they will do.

The soprano range usually extends from middle C on the piano to G an octave and a half higher. Of course it may extend a little lower or a little higher, depending on the person and their training. The voice texture may be light or, what we call, dramatic. The dramatic voice tends to be a little bigger and fuller. The light voice is softer and somewhat childlike in its sound. But each is in the soprano range. Each can be trained to appropriate the full range of expression of the soprano voice.

The alto voice is a little lower in range. It can range from G below middle C to E an octave and a third above middle C. More often than not, it is a fuller voice and tends not to be as dramatic. Those altos that do develop a dramatic voice call themselves mezzo-sopranos. It sounds more dramatic.

For men, there are two general classifications, tenor and bass.

The tenor voice is the higher range of voice. The usual range of the tenor is around C below middle C to G above middle C. If you are untrained it may be hard to make a clear determination of your singing range. That is OK. In our training, we do not emphasize range building for quite a while. We are more interested in building strength for the entire voice. The range will come with strength.

The bass voice is the lowest of the voices. It is also the hardest to define by range. Some basses can sing from a lowest note of two C’s below middle C to a G above middle C. Others may have much less of a range. Most basses top out their range at E above middle C. Basses are distinguished as baritones if their voice texture is a little lighter and their range not as deep. baritones tend to have a higher range. Many baritones can easily sing up to an A flat above middle C. But their texture is clearly that of a lower voice than a tenor.

Our goal with free online voice training lessons

Our goal is to help you become the singer that you want to be. You may wish to improve your singing so you can participate in your church choir. Or you may wish to be able to learn and enjoy singing some of your favorite songs.  It could be that you are like me and just enjoy singing beautifully.

There are so many beautiful songs that have been composed through the years. Many of which we cannot appreciate because there are no singers who can sing them. What joy it is to be able to learn a song and then sing it well. Not to impress people, but to enjoy it for your own pleasure. Too many want to learn to sing to impress others or become famous and rich. This is a degradation of artful singing. To learn to sing well a song is a reward in itself, whether you become famous or get rich.

If we can help you to become the singer you want to be, then we are a success. I encourage you to let that be your goal. Be a unique singer. Do not mimic other singers, but be the singer God created you to be. Singing is something that will last for eternity. Many other jobs and functions will be done away with in eternity, but not singing. For those of us who train to sing well, it is the beginning of an eternal joyful experience.
